The most dangerous place in Essex County

The most dangerous place in Essex County for deer...

Today through February 28th is a deer hunt at South Mountain Reservation on Tues/Thurs.

All access to the reservation area behind Codey Arena and Turtle Back Zoo is closed by police cars and other official looking cars at each gate.

All the while, professional trained marksmen go in and shoot deer to control the population. There were a bunch of news trucks in front of South Mountain Arena by the bus stop to cover the news...You can head on over to get into the cameraman's shot, but I'd stay away unless you wanna get shot literally. listen

What do Izod, Nemo and Ice have in common?

We're always on the lookout for fun and worthwhile stuff to do with the kids.

And I just got back from the Disney on Ice Finding Nemo Spectacular at the Izod Center.

It was a great family show. Full of music, lights, tons of ice skating performers and even pyrotechnics. A great show overall.

If you're searching for something a little special to do with the kids and family this holiday weekend. check out www.disneyonice.com (try coupon code: STAR or F59).

Gutters

Recently, we had to replace a section of gutters on our roof since it was damaged during a wind storm at night. Bent aluminum isn't a pretty sight.

So I used ServiceMagic.com as usual to find a reliable contractor to replace the damaged gutter section. I got varying estimates for the home repair work, but one contractor stood out: Pete of Castle Creations, LLC. He showed up when promised for the free estimate. He was polite. And he gave me an estimate as promised quickly. What I liked even better was the pricing at less than $10/linear foot - even for the relatively small job.

Anyway, the part that stood out was the number of high ratings on the Service Magic site for his work. There were literally hundreds of past satisfied customers.

After sitting on it for a 2 weeks since it was so cold and rainy out recently, Pete emailed me to see where we stood on the repair job. I replied and he promptly tried to call me back to schedule a time. I wasn't able to return his calls, but he was persistent and actually showed up yesterday to do the work. He came with one other guy who did the work and was out of here in no time. They also cleaned the gutters of my house before they left.

He pitched me on gutter guards for $2/linear foot installed in a low-pressure way. I'm seriously considering it since Ned Stevens charges $75/cleaning -- so I'll break even if they work and last 3 or 4 years, assuming I'd hire Ned Stevens gutter cleaning 1x or 2x a year. Pete guaranteed that my gutters won't get clogged or he'll come back and clear them out himself.

Long story short.
I'd recommend Pete Pflanzer of Castle Creations for gutter replacement, repair or new installations. (732-396-0962)

On The 13th Day Of Christmas -- We Mulched The Tree

Christmas trees live on beyond Christmas in Livingston township now.

The Department of Public Works is picking up Christmas trees curbside once a week for this whole month of January. And guess what they're going to do with all those trees?

The trees are going to be put through the chipper and become mulch. In fact, you can now call the township and ask for a free delivery of 2-yards of tree mulch for your backyard. Yes, it has greens in them, but if you're looking for filler (perhaps beneath a top-layer of better mulch?) this is perfect and also environmentally conscious of course.

CompUSA Not Missed

The COMPUSA on Route 10 Closed a couple of months ago and doesn't seem to be missed - especially during this last holiday shopping season in town.

Best Buy and Circuit City cover most items you'll want. Radio Shack at the Livingston Mall has all the cables you'll ever need for a PC or other gadgets. And if you're looking for some of the latest consumer electronics products like plasma or digital cameras at dirt cheap prices, 6th Avenue Electronics still happily advertises the product you want, but bombards you with slick, sleezy sales pitches to upsell you and divert your dollars to other non-sale items as you walk in the door.

It seems that CompUSA is gone for good -- practically speaking, and we'll have to wait and see who takes up that decent retail location on Route 10 Eastbound.
